Luke 9:3-6
He told them: “Take nothing for the journey – no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra tunic.  Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town.  If people do not welcome you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave their town, as a testimony against them.”  So they set out and went from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere.

Reflection
Jesus gave his disciples whom he was sending out to spread the news of the kingdom of God instructions not to take anything with them.  On the surface, this might seem troubling.  Why would Jesus want them to be so unprepared?

It wasn’t that Jesus wanted his disciples to be unprepared he just didn’t want them to be depending on their own efforts.  He didn’t want them to take anything with them because when their mission was a success he wanted it to be obviously clear that it was the power of God that made the difference, not anything they might have done to prepare themselves.

When we are sharing the gospel with others do we rely on the power of God or our own power?
