Matthew 28:18-20
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.  And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Reflection

These few verses of scripture are known as the Great Commission.  Why do we call these words of Jesus the Great Commission?  The reason why is because it is the only commission that Jesus gave us.  The church might do a lot of things but if we don’t make disciples and develop disciples then the church is ignoring the one thing that Jesus commanded us to do.

Some people have suggested that when the church plans to do anything that the first question that we need to ask is “How will this help us make disciples?”  It has also been suggested that if we can’t figure out how disciples are made as a result of that activity that we should be brave enough to refuse to do it.

The church only has so much time and energy and if we spend that time and energy on things that Christ didn’t tell us to do then we are wasting our time and we are failing to obey the single command that Christ gave to the church as a whole.

How does our church intentionally make disciples of Jesus Christ?

Are we getting results?  Are people coming to know Jesus?  Could we do a better job of disciple-making?
