Matthew 5:14-16

“You are the light of the world.  A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.  Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Reflection

Yesterday, we learned that Jesus commands us to be “salt” and enhance what exists around us.  Today is a continuation of the same passage, He tells us to be “light,” a light that is not hidden but a light that is out in public (not “under a bowl,” “put on its stand,” “gives light to everyone in the house”).

Just like “salt” is to enhance something else, light is used for others as well.  Light can remove darkness and can shine the way to God.  Further, we see that as we are light, we get the sense that we are to be different as this light, compared to darkness. We are to do “good deeds” SO THAT our Father in heaven will be glorified.  So in other words, our good deeds shine the light to God.

Where do you do good deeds?  Are your good deeds evidence of God’s love through Jesus Christ in your life and glorify God?
