Matthew 5:13

“You are the salt of the earth.  But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?  It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

Reflection
Here is one definition of “salt” (as a noun):  a white crystalline substance that gives seawater its characteristic taste and is used for seasoning or preserving food.  We salt food to enhance its taste.  I personally salt tomatoes and eggs.  I know of people who salt other foods like cantaloupe.  So the salt is used to ENHANCE the flavor of the food.
Jesus says in this passage that as His followers, we are to be salt, in other words, enhance the world and culture around us.  So salt enhances something else and is really not for itself.
Where around you (your place of employment, your school, your neighborhood, your family, …) are you enhancing (for God’s Kingdom) what already exists?
