Exodus 34:6-7
“The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”

Reflection
God is compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love, faithful, forgiving even when we rebel and sin against God.  This is good news for ALL considering that elsewhere, the Bible tells us that we ALL sin and fall short of what God would have us be.
But this same passage says that God has to punish the guilty.  In other words, judgement is also part of God’s character; God’s perfect character.

What does it mean in your life to live in this tension between a forgiving God but one that also needs to punish sin?
