What is Contentment?

Proverbs 21:20
In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has.

Philippians 4:12
I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty.  I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.

Psalm 24:1
The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.

Contentment.  Not many truly learn what that is.  We have a mistaken idea about contentment.  So many of us think that contentment is when we get the one desire of our hearts for which we have been yearning.  Unfortunately, if that is the definition of contentment then we are doomed to never experience being content because there will always be something that will be the desire of our hearts for which we are yearning.

Contentment cannot be based on what we have. Contentment is something that we can achieve in spite of what we have.  If we have a lot we can be content.  If we have little we can be content.  If we have nothing we can be content.  Contentment is based on an attitude of the heart and mind and has nothing to do with whether we are prosperous or in want.  So, the question is “How can we be content?”  That is what we will investigate in our devotionals this week.
