Discerning Spirit
“Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.  But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”
- Hebrews 5:13-14

If we are to overcome the enemy’s attacks in our lives then we have to develop the ability to discern what is good for us and what is not good for us.  Many Christians find themselves giving into temptation because they have never developed a discerning spirit.  They walk right into Satan’s traps and are befuddled because they end up making decisions that take them further away from God, not closer to God.  The goal is to develop a discerning spirit so that Satan’s trap can be recognized and avoided before one falls into the,.
If we are going to be a person who is able to discern the danger that the enemy might be luring us into then we have to know right from wrong, both in theory and practice.  We must know how to apply God’s truth to our lives and how to live in obedience to his commandments.  We need to know God’s commandments and why God asks us to follow those commandments and we need to know the consequences of not following God’s commandments.  When we have that knowledge, then we have the information that we need to discern the times we are going astray and to avoid those situations in which Satan might be leading us into a trap.
When we understand that we must discern the danger in doing certain things or exposing ourselves to certain situations then we can avoid a lot of difficulties and problems for our lives.
