Luke 9:61-62
“Still another said, ‘I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good-by to my family.’  Jesus replied, ‘No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.’”

Reflection

Jesus demands that we respond immediately to his call to follow him.  Does that sound harsh to you?  Today we see another person asking Jesus permission to put off responding to his call to follow.  This individual wants to say good-by to his family.  Sounds like a reasonable request doesn’t it?  However, Jesus knows that we can’t be focused on other things and be fully focused on following him.  He wants us to make a decision and he doesn’t want us dividing our loyalty between him and other concerns of life.  Take some time to think about your commitment to follow Jesus.  Do you put off full commitment to him because of other concerns and needs that you have in your life?
