Hungers for the Presence of God

“…let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
—Hebrews 12:1b-2

This week we begin a sermon series that is going to highlight the kind of church that heaven applauds.  In other words, what kind of church makes all of heaven rejoice and give thanks to God for its mission and ministry?  The answer to that question is what we are going to discover as we progress through this sermon series.

We will see that when a church hungers for the presence of God through glorifying Jesus that heaven applauds and affirms that desire.  What does it mean to hunger for the presence of God?  It means this, nothing more or nothing less.  Our hearts say, “Give me more of Jesus.  No matter what I have to do.  No matter what I have to sacrifice.  Just give me more of Jesus.”  That’s what it means to hunger after the presence of God.
